Prior to the sorting, check the pockets for coins, paper, tissues and other items. Remove belts from pants and other removable clothing ornaments that may be damaged by or can damage the washing machine. Afterwards, turn all clothing inside making sure to undo cuffs, pull out sleeves and pant legs. You may also choose to turn the clothing inside out. There may be items that have specific instructions for that. Make sure buttons are properly latched to avoid breaking them. Check for any loose threads, or anything that may need sewing repair. It is a must to repair those items prior to washing. Keep hooks and zippers closed so other garments would not get tangled on those. Do not forget to place small clothing items in a laundry mesh bag. These items may include socks, mittens, and fine hosiery. They may get snagged with other items.
Be sure to check clothing labels or tags for washing instructions. These laundry care labels not only contain instructions for washing but it also indicates drying and ironing recommendations. You will be able to read there if an item can be machine washed, hand washed, to be washed separately or for dry clean only.
There are several ways on sorting your laundry items. Sorting can be done by fabric color, fabric type and amount of soiling. You will end up having several loads of laundry afterwards.
Sorting by Color
Sort whites or light colored laundry items into their own pile. In this pile, you may also include pastel colored clothing, and those with light gray and white background or you can create another pile for the items. Dark or deep colored apparel must be separated in another pile.
Sorting by Fabric Type
Different fabric types require different washing and drying methods. Delicate fabrics such as wools, silk, linen, lace and lingerie may require hand washing. Lint producing items such as towels must not be mixed with lint attracting or lint receiving fabrics such as synthetics, corduroy and permanent press.
Sorting by Amount of Soiling
Heavily soiled laundry items must be separated from lightly soiled clothing. These heavily soiled garments have to be pre-treated or soaked prior to washing.
Sorting the laundry if done properly would save you time, energy and money. You can even teach your kids to sort their dirty laundry as soon as they start dressing themselves.
